Hudson, Vice Chair S. Lamb, Secretary Sr. A. Anderson P. Burkett, B. Evans, B. Frank, C. MacDonald, V. Sheets Ex-Officio: Provost Maynard I. Administrative Report Provost Maynard addressed: 1) R. Jefferson has been placed in temporary service in the position vacated by R. Antonak; Provost’s intention is to hire a consultant this fall to review the academic affairs division for better organization—a plan would be brought forward in late fall. 2) the New Faculty Orientation will take place this Wednesday and Thursday. 3) ISU received favorable notice in a recent Princeton Review article listing the Midwest’s top colleges. 4) fall enrollment: shared incoming student enrollment figures which are favorable in comparison to this time last fall—student categories indicating growth are new, transfer and graduate studies. Returning student enrollment is down only by a few. Ten-day enrollment last year was 11,616. 5) renovation on campus continues. 6) the third capital budget presentation was given last Friday to the state legislature; a favorable response is anticipated. These monies are targeted for the renovation of University Hall. Architectural plans have been reviewed with much promise for improvement and expanded use of this facility. II. Chair Report Chairperson Hudson: 1) welcomed the Executive Committee. 2) reported on Senate summer activities. 3) established liaisons to the Standing Committees. 4) noted the Back to School Picnic and New Senate Orientation. III. Fifteen Minute Open Discussion 1) The omission of ISU in a recent article in an Indianapolis paper noting high school valedictorian and salutatorian student’s college enrollment--the University has instituted a new scholarship for students within the top 5% of graduating class or chosen as class valedictorian or salutatorian. EC#1, 8/17/04 Page 2 2) Committee members were encouraged to reread Section II of the University Handbook, particularly noting the primary and advisory authority of faculty. 3) Scholarships available for transfer students were noted. 4) Handbook language to correspond to the recently approved Special Purpose Faculty document will be forthcoming--it was noted that the Provost has established a team to work to insure incorporation of all facets of the plan within University functions. IV. Nominations for Parliamentarian J. Tenerelli was nominated by acclamation as Parliamentarian. (Lamb, Sheets 7-0-1) His name will be forwarded to the Senate for approval. V. Standing Committee Slates After modification, approved as amended to be forwarded to the Senate. (Anderson, Frank 7-0-1) VI. All University Committee Recommendations Approved to be forwarded to the Senate. (Anderson, MacDonald 7-0-1) VII. Faculty Dismissal Hearing Committee Approved two members for five-year terms. (Frank, Evans 7-0-1) VIII. Charges to Standing Committees The Chair distributed a draft of Standing Committee charges for discussion. Executive Committee members will forward to the Chair suggestions for additional charges for discussion at the next meeting. IX. Graduate Council Recommendations Probation Policy “A student whose grade point average drops below a 3.0 (3.25 or 3.5 in certain programs) will be placed on probation for 9 credit hours. If at the end of the 9 credit hours of probation, the student’s grade point average is still below the required level, the student will be dismissed from the academic program. A student who is placed on academic probation or dismissed from their academic program may request a review of the case by the Graduate Student Appeals Committee of the Graduate Council.” Accepted to send to the Senate. (Burkett, Sheets 7-0-1) Application Process (Executive Committee appendage in italics.) 1) The language should be changed to “Expedited Graduate Application Process” rather than Automatic Acceptance. 2) The $35 application fee for continuing ISU students should be waived. EC#1, 8/17/04 Page 3 3) Currently enrolled ISU students and alumni should not have to request a separate official transcript be sent to the graduate school. The application form should reflect whether the student is an ISU student/alumni, therefore, transcripts are available. In addition, it should be stated on the application form that departmental requirements may be more stringent than the University requirements. 4) Undergraduate students who have completed 94 credit hours or above (senior standing) who meet the minimum graduate school and departmental requirements could be pre-admitted into a graduate program of study. If admitted, these students could enroll in a maximum of 9 credit hours of 600 or above courses at the discretion of the program. These courses would count as undergraduate elective hours and be counted towards completing graduate level coursework. 5) To assist with the expedited acceptance process a survey should be mailed to all appropriate Departmental Chairs and/or Graduate coordinators to gain feedback on the current application process. This survey would include input and potential suggestions for improvement on the application form itself as well as the process once a student has applied.
