I. Approval of the minutes of Jan. 11, 2007. Approved (4-0-1) II. Reports: Administrative Affairs liaison: NR Executive Committee liaison: Arthur Halpern reported. There was considerable discussion on the elimination of philosophy and physics depts. They were concerned especially since the physics issue hadn’t been on the list for program review. Update from Ed Kinley that the issue will be delayed going to the Board until their April meeting. There was also discussion about the process and timeline on the merger of the 2 colleges of Nursing and HHP. Where will the funds to do this come from, among other things? Rich talked about the faculty excellence award change recommendations. The Board meeting for Jan. 26 has been canceled so the Feb. agenda is liable to be very full and there is no meeting scheduled for March. Chairperson: Harriet Hudson will be going to Exec. next Tues. III. Open discussion IV. Old Business: Reorganization of Freshman Advising. We didn’t make a decision regarding Freshman Advising at the last meeting because we didn’t want it to be confused with or construed to imply support for or against the University College issue. FAC, as well as some other committees, are dealing with the advising issue and some other groups are considering the University College proposals. Cathy Baker clarified that all the recommendations will be gathered and they will write a summary/proposal for the Provost who will take it to Faculty Senate to send to the various appropriate groups. Chair will work on a draft of something for this committee to approve that would be not as generic and yet not involving issues that are not part of the purview of this committee at this time and that will be voted on at the next meeting. V. New Business: Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. Blanche Evans and David Wright presented the topic which is a carryover from last year. The revised document concerns procedure which was. Moved/seconded (BH/LK) to consider the Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure document that was distributed. Discussion followed. The committee liked the optional participation aspect of the revised proposal. An additional document on classroom cheating was distributed. This model (Multimedia Integrity Teaching Tool) is being used at several nearby institutions (Ball State, EIU to name 2). Could administration of such a tool be in a proctored setting for distance students? Response was yes. Where does ethical and professional behavior fit in this policy? Difficulty is in the fact that different professions have different standards for behaviors and so they tried to have some general statements to address this. It has become apparent that the issue of academic integrity is an issue of great concern as evidenced by the number of faculty using TurnItIn and the number of incidents reported. Reference was made to a book, Doing Honest Work in College, by Charles Lipsom which addresses this issue. Motion was approved with the understanding of the addition of a statement regarding distance students being able to participate in a proctored setting. (5-0-1) Next meeting will be Feb. 8 at 3:45 in Root Hall will be 237A. We do have a new charge regarding voting in the faculty council of A&S. We also have some other issues such as the minus grades issue and the SIRS/faculty evaluation issue. Dave Langley had done some work on that issue a few years ago and this committee discussed this at the end of last year. Meeting adjourned 2:50 pm.
