Barnhart of the College of Nursing spoke to the issue of gastric bypass surgery. She noted that it was indicated in cases of morbid obesity (over 100 pounds overweight). It can prevent the need for insulin treatments for some diabetics and can reduce hypertension. She presented other information related to justification for the treatment and offered to provide more as needed. She requested that FEBC consider recommending adding this to the ISU health plan. C. Barton said that Indiana mandates this coverage for insured health plans (ISU is not affected by this mandate since we are self-insured). Medicare does pay for this surgery. The cost of the surgery is $18,000 and the total cost including follow-up can be as much as $30,000. Barnhart was asked to provide statistics on the long-term success and costs of the surgery. Subsidy of enrollment at Le Club as a general wellness benefit related to weight control was discussed. 2. C. Barton reported that G. Floyd has revised a white paper on retirement health benefits in preparation for a meeting of the Benefits Review Committee. 3. K. Bolinger reported on the salary compression subcommittee. He distributed questions he asked G. Floyd about faculty salaries. L. Maule asked for information on how other universities have dealt with this issue. 4. It was agreed that the committee would meet next Wednesday to continue reports from subcommittees. The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 am.
