Allen, D. Malooley, M. Murphy, R. Peters, L. Rosenhein, C. Stemmans Student members: Ex-officio: D. Collins, S. Gick, H. Hudson, L. Maule, B. McLaren Executive Committee Liaison: Absent: F. Lai, V. Muyumba, D. Worley Guests: N. Rogers M. Murphy called the meeting to order at 3:37 PM. 1. A motion to approve the minutes of meeting #1, 9-2-08, was made and passed, 6-0-0, (Rosenhein/Stemmans). 2. N. Brattain-Rogers distributed material and discussed the upcoming NCA accreditation visit. An extension has been requested by President Bradley and ISU is awaiting a response. There are two primary foci. The “traditional” five areas, each of which has a committee working on it. R. Guell is currently working with OSPIRE to gather information for these five committees to utilize in their preparation. Student outcomes and diversity are important parts of these five areas. An update is due by the end of September then the documentation will move forward and be compiled into the report. The second primary is termed: “Special Emphasis.” This is Community Engagement and Experiential Learning. A retreat is scheduled for November and it is intended for the entire campus to become involved in this activity. It is noted that this is a plan and not a review. Two to three years following the NCA visit, a second visit will occur to review and evaluate this area. 3. L. Maule gave an update on the General Education Council actions. The Council is meeting every Friday at Noon. They have passed GEOG 110/L as a Gen Ed course and it is forwarded to CAAC. The course is intended to be a laboratory course and will result in the discontinuation of GEOG 160/L. The Council also dealt with assessment and accountability issues. It is working on a template that will be provided to the Chairs in order for them to be able to quickly evaluate Gen Ed offerings by their department. The template will allow verification that a given course is actually doing what is intended for that area of the GE2000 Program. Courses should be evaluated once a year. 4. L. Maule provided an update on the General Education Task Force. This body meets weekly on Friday afternoon. It is currently working on learning objectives for each of the new areas in the Foundational Studies Program. A cyber-wire notification has gone out providing information on change number three and differences from number two. Another open forum is also planned to allow further discourse and input. It is reasonable to review the new program in a more ongoing manner or not longer that two years to prevent the need to completely revamp the program every few years like we have done in the past and are currently doing again. It is anticipated that the plan could be submitted by the end of this year or early next year into the approval process. It is realized there will be implications for all departments involved in the offering of courses in the present Gen Ed program. Staffing, scheduling, assessment, “student first” scheduling, different modes of delivery of the courses, student outcome assessment and student satisfaction are all vitally important in a successful program. It is anticipated the new program will allow a higher degree of accountability, both in meeting course requirements and quality of teaching, that will result in a better experience for the students. 5. M. Murphy has done some research on the question of defining a Department/School/College and has found it to be more of an art rather than a science. It is requested that the committee members dwell upon the question and do some additional research on the issue prior to discussion at a later meeting. 6. The committee adjourned at 5:05 PM.
