Absent: Bill Clyburn, Rocco Gennaro, Harriet Hudson, Guest: Bob Guell Meeting Commenced at 3:45 p.m. called to order by Vice Chair Schneirov. Agenda I. Approval of minutes of Dec. 4, 2006: Moved/seconded (Fine/Sperry) to approve; Approved as distributed (4-0-2). II. Reports Chairperson report : N.R. III. Liaison reports: Exec Comm.: Arthur Halpern reported on a presentation by Kevin Snider concerning the mechanics of some procedures in Enrollment Management in trying to increase the numbers and quality of new admissions. Coming up could be an issue regarding activities within the College of Arts & Sciences and voting members of faculty council. This could be coming to this committee. Academic Affairs: Bob English distributed a document from New Faculty Orientation session in January. Especially noted was issue #5 which dealt with their concerns about the SIRS evaluations. There seems to be a perception that these are a bigger factor on pre-tenure evaluations than they actually are but that may vary from department to department. This is a concern that needs to be taken seriously and investigated. Bob English also distributed a document which is an idea for a category called Affiliate Faculty. This is just something that might be considered later. III. Open Discussion IV. Old Business: NR V New Business: Bob Guell was invited to the table for the following discussions A. Elimination of "permanent" incomplete: Referencing the distributed document on this topic, Bob Guell pointed out that it is currently possible to graduate from ISU with an incomplete on the student’s record. Students sometimes enroll in courses so that they have a full load for their last semester for insurance, financial aide, etc. but they never intend to complete, nor do they complete the class but instead take an incomplete and then never complete the class, having benefited in those several ways in the meantime. It was moved and seconded (Hine/Sperry) to accept the recommendation from UAAC that an undergraduate student cannot graduate with an incomplete on their record, when that incomplete was assigned for any semester or term after Spring 2007. Motion passed unanimously (6-0-0). B. Reorganization of Freshman advising, as suggested by TAFFY report: There will be a presentation on Jan. 26 on the topic of University College. A document was distributed regarding first year experience and what we could do to improve that including academic advising, etc. We need to better coordinate advising and services to our students. AOP admitted students, who are therefore served by SASC in various ways, often did better in their first year than those equally prepared students who didn’t receive special services. This may indicate that more than AOP students need better advising and more intentioned services to succeed in their first year. The better efforts would happen in a proposed University College but that entity is not being examined by FAC at this point. The piece of this proposal to be considered by this committee is the change in freshman advising piece. There was some discussion around the University College topic to try to see why this improved first year needed a College in which to happen rather than have it happen within the current structure. Major concerns are the money, who would be in charge and what would be that title, and how would it affect the colleges? It was moved to table further decision on the advising piece of this until the next meeting, Jan. 25 at 1:00 in Root Hall 237A. Approved by consensus. Meeting adjourned 5:25 pm.
