  • Experiences and coping among female caseworkers at women's shelters:A qualitative study.

    Wu, H.Norene (2012-05-16)
In-depth individual interviews were conducted with 12 peer-referred participants to gain information on work experiences and coping strategies are explored. A conceptual framework for experiences and coping among shelter caseworkers emerged consisting of work motivation, experiences, and coping. The themes that structure this framework are discussed in detail. Unique findings include the benefits of gradual exposure to IPV work, issues related to addressing spirituality in service provision, a symptom development timeframe, and a wider range of shelter experiences and coping strategies. Implications for caseworkers, shelter administrators, and mental health service providers are suggested. Recommendations for conducting future research with shelter caseworkers are proposed.
